Taylor. Founded in 1998, the small, professional outdoor troupe had slated "The Merry Wives of Windsor" and "The Skin of Our Teeth" for September at the MacAllister Center for the Performing Arts in Garfield Park. "Because we played there last year in September, we had hideous weather and lost a couple of performances. As a result, we didn't end the season with the money we needed," said Taylor.
Actors weren't paid for at least six months. That meant she had trouble casting shows this goround. "So we figured the best thing was to pull back and see what we can do about the future." With a budget of about $80,000 and a staff of one fulltimer and one part-timer, the company typically produced two shows each summer: a Shakespeare and another classic playwright. For the first five seasons, it played at both Marian College and Franklin College, averaging audiences of 100 to 200 per performance. In the initial season at Garfield Park last year, attendance dropped by more than half, Taylor said.
"Our mission statement was to give young people their first paid work" of a few hundred dollars per season. "But when you have a bad year, you have to rethink your she said. The company will still tour Indianapolis-area schools. It hopes to reorganize, fund-raise and reopen, but Taylor isn't sure when. She actually did.
Bonnie Britton A de-lovely audience Older audiences here may not be flocking to "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle" or "A Cinderella Story," but they're keeping "De-Lovely," the Cole Porter musical bio, alive at AMC Castleton Arts. The movie, starring Kevin Kline as the legendary from Peru, and Ashley Judd as his wife, Linda, has been racking up decent business. A theater employee said a recent audience included five patrons who needed walkers to get from their cars into the theater. Patrons in wheelchairs also have come to see what made Porter tick. At another AMC theater in town, Clearwater Crossing, a screening of "Collateral" (which opened last week) went off without any problems, but the showing of trailers that preceded the movie was in dire need of some TLC. The trailers for (we think it was "Friday Night a football movie about high school football in Texas, and "Taxi," (we're pretty sure) starring Queen Latifah and Jimmy Fallon, both played upside down and backward. That certainly put a cheerleader in the football film, with legs wide apart, in an entirely different light than intended. And how about those cars clinging to the top of the screen? Instead of throwing popcorn, the audience seemed to enjoy the football players marching off the field (or was it onto the field?) upside down.
And the backward dialogue was even more amusing, with imitators heard throughout the audience.
