This easy Whiskey Sour recipe gives a classic co*cktail a twist with the addition of seasonal Meyer lemon juice. It’s a delicious batch co*cktail for your next party!

Batch co*cktails are key to stress-free entertaining. Not only can you make them in advance, they also free up your time during the party so you don’t have to be stuck playing bartender for everyone.

When most people think of batch co*cktails, recipes for margaritas, sangria and punch come to mind. But have you ever considered serving a pitcher of whiskey sours? To me, they are the perfect cool weather co*cktail.

These make-ahead Meyer Lemon Whiskey Sours are simple, seasonal and totally refreshing.

Sounds like 5-star party libation to me!

Ingredients

If you trace the origins of the whiskey sour, you’ll find they were made with 3 ingredients: whiskey, fresh lemon juice and sugar. This homemade Meyer Lemon version has four ingredients:

  • Whiskey
  • Fresh meyer lemon juice
  • Fresh lime juice
  • Simple syrup (Did you know you can make simple syrup at home? It's so cheap and easy!)

What is a meyer lemon?

For those of you who’ve never enjoyed a meyer lemon, they are a cross between a mandarin orange and a regular lemon.

They have a darker color and are smaller and rounder than regular lemons with a smoother, thinner skin like a mandarin. Generally available in grocery stores from November through May, you’ll most often find meyer lemons sold by the bag rather than individually.

The rumor mill claims you can eat meyer lemons like regular fruit as they are sweeter than your average lemon. I’m not sold on that idea (still too much pucker for my taste), but the combination of fresh meyer lemon and lime juices gives the "made from scratch" sour its unique flavor in this co*cktail recipe.

Instructions

These Meyer Lemon Whiskey Sours are super simple to make and great for parties.

Step one: Squeeze juices from your lemons and limes. I love to use this handheld juicer to get every last drop from my citrus fruit. Easy to clean and store, too.

I also like to strain my juices through a sieve before adding it to my co*cktails. Keeps me and my guests from walking around all night with pulp in our teeth! (Never a good look.)

Note: You can squeeze your lemons and limes up to two days in advance before the flavor of the juice starts to slowly degrade.

Step two: Stir together whiskey, juices and simple syrup in a large pitcher. Refrigerate until ready to serve (up to 4 hours).

Step three: Pour whiskey sours into ice-filled low ball glasses and garnish with maraschino cherries and meyer lemon chunks on co*cktail picks.

Tip: This recipe is written as a batch co*cktail because if you’re going through all the effort of juicing those lemons and limes, why not make a pitcher-full and invite friends over? That said, if you’re flying solo and craving a whiskey sour, simply scale down the recipe to get the number of drinks you need.

FAQs

What whiskey is best for this drink?

Since this co*cktail is a blend of fruit juices, simple syrup and whiskey, definitely don’t break the bank on your whiskey purchase. Save that bottle of 20- or 30-year whiskey for sipping on the rocks.
That said, don’t buy the cheapest whiskey out there, either, as it isstill the predominant flavor in this drink. It’sthe same school of thought where you only cook with wine you would also drink.

Can I use regular lemon juice instead of meyer lemon juice?

Yes, you can! If you have super tart lemons, you may have to add just a touch more simple syrup to keep the drink from being too tart. Try the recipe as written and then adjust if needed.

Make ahead tips

Make this whiskey sour recipe in advance to save your sanity before guests arrive. Juice your lemons and limes the morning of your party and combine with simple syrup in a pitcher.

Before your guests arrive, either add the whiskey to the pitcher or set out the bottle for folks to add to their own co*cktails. Waaay low maintenance for you and fun for your guests.

I would suggest using a better quality Bourbon that is of a higher proof that will stand up to the citrus. Knob Creek, Old Forester, Wild Turkey 101. Something that fits your flavor profile. Middle Shelf or above. Definitely not top shelf like you said.

Love the flavor of Meyer Lemon, I use it in cooking as well. Great for Piccata dishes.

FAQs

How much juice is in a Meyer lemon? ›

There are approximately 2 to 3 Tablespoons of citrus juice in a Meyer lemon if you were to press it with a juicer. You would need 5 1/2 to 6 Meyer lemons to fill a cup with fresh juice. A standard lemon produces 3 to 4 Tablespoons of juice, usually requiring just 5 to 5 1/4 lemons to fill a cup.

What makes a Meyer lemon difference? ›

Taste: Another key difference that makes Meyer lemons stand out is their sweet, slightly floral taste. A regular lemon is acidic by nature and has a sour and tangy taste with some natural sweetness, but a Meyer lemon lacks the sour tang. This is what makes it such a great fruit for sweet desserts or salads.

What is the difference between a Meyer lemon and a Eureka lemon? ›

Eureka lemons, which are the kind you're most likely to find in your grocery store, have a sour, tangy flavor. By comparison, Meyer lemons are more fragrant and a touch sweeter. Their brightly colored skin is smoother and more vibrant than that of Eureka lemons, which is thicker and textured.

What's the difference between Whiskey Sour and whiskey old fashioned? ›

Both a whiskey sour and an old-fashioned co*cktail are made with whiskey—and that's the only similarity really. A whiskey sour balances the whiskey with lemon juice and sugar or simple syrup, while an old-fashioned is stronger, more spirit forward, and made with bitters and a sugar cube.

How much lemon juice is enough? ›

A glass of lemon water first thing in the morning is an age-old remedy. To get your recommended daily intake of vitamin C (75 and 90 mg for women and men, respectively), you may need to drink about three-fourths of a cup of pure lemon juice per day. Mix the juice with 250 to 350 mL of water.

How much lemon juice should I use? ›

How much lemon water should you drink? Stephens recommends using the juice from two to three lemons (about four to six tablespoons) throughout the day, and drinking one or two glasses of lemon water with meals, and one glass in between meals. But don't necessarily add lemon to every glass of water you drink.

Why is Meyer lemon so expensive? ›

Their limited window of availability, coupled with their more fragile nature (which makes shipping them more difficult), naturally makes them more expensive than hardier, year-round regular lemons too.

Are Meyer lemons more sour? ›

The truth is, they're an entirely different breed. Compared to sour Eureka and Lisbon lemons (the varieties you'll find year-round at most grocery stores), Meyer lemons are sweeter and less acidic, with lovely floral undertones.

What is so special about Meyer lemons? ›

Because Meyer lemons have a sweeter, more floral flavor than regular lemons, they make an excellent substitute for regular lemons in dessert recipes.

Can you eat lemons from a Meyer lemon tree? ›

Meyer Lemon fruits are safe to eat. Packed with juice, these citrus gems are a culinary favorite, not a health hazard.

What is another name for a Meyer lemon? ›

Citrus × meyeri, the Meyer lemon (Chinese: 梅爾檸檬; pinyin: méiěr níngméng), is a hybrid citrus fruit native to China. It is not a lemon, but is instead a cross between a citron and a mandarin/pomelo hybrid.

What is the best lemon tree? ›

Across the country, the Meyer Lemon Tree is the most popular choice. It is a sweet version of a lemon, with thin skin and fragrant blossoms. You can use Meyer lemons in any recipe that you would use a regular lemon, with the amount of sugar reduced to account for the sweetness that the Meyer brings.

What type of person drinks Whiskey Sour? ›

Dating all the way back to the 1800s, a Whisky Sour is about as classic a co*cktail as you can get. If you're a Whisky Sour sipper, it's likely that you are very complex; you tend to have many different - sometimes opposing - personality traits and are extremely adaptable in social situations.

What kind of whiskey should I use for Whiskey Sour? ›

Whiskey: Bourbon is the whiskey traditionally used in a classic whiskey sour, with its warm vanilla and brown sugar flavor notes. We strongly recommend using a mid-range, high-proof bourbon (between 43-50% ABV) so that its flavor does not get drowned out by the other ingredients.

Which lemon has the most juice? ›

It is also commonly used in cooking and baking. The bright orange fruit adds a sour, acidic taste to both sweet and savory recipes and is an excellent source of vitamin C. For this reason, some people mix lemon juice in their water or tea to strengthen the immune system. Typically, Meyer lemons have the most juice.

Can I substitute bottled lemon juice for fresh lemon juice? ›

Nutritionally speaking, bottled and fresh lemon juice are the same. Both are high in vitamin C (although fresh contains much more), folate, and potassium, and low in calories and fat. But one thing that isn't the same is the taste. Bottled lemon juice just tastes different.

Is 100% lemon juice in a bottle the same as a lemon? ›

However, if you've ever tasted bottled lemon juice, you'll notice that the flavour is a little off – not bright and lemony like the real stuff. This is because bottled lemon juice usually contains additives and preservatives such as Sodium Metabisulphite (E223) or Potassium Metabisulphite (E224).

Can I use Meyer lemons instead of regular lemons? ›

THE BOTTOM LINE: For applications that don't depend on the bracing acidity of a standard lemon, a Meyer lemon can be a fine substitute. But where a recipe demands bold, bright flavor for balance, reach for a standard lemon.
