It doesn’t get much simpler thanfrozen bananas and blueberries, milk, and somehoneyfor extra sweetness.

However, you can easily use this banana berry smoothie recipe as a base to create your own customized drink!

  • Add Some Protein:Greek yogurt or peanut butter will give you an extra boost for the day — plus, either will make your banana blueberry smoothie thickerandcreamier.

A scoop of protein powder will do the trick as well.

  • Get In Your Greens:Fresh spinach leaves can be added to just about any smoothie recipe!

While they will change the final hue, they won’t affect the flavor at all.

  • Boost The Nutrients:Hemp seeds boast a long list of vitamins and minerals, and flaxmeal (ground flax seeds) provides plenty of fiber and omega-3 fatty acids.

Add up to a tablespoon of either — or a combo of both!

Banana Berry Smoothie Recipe Tips and Tricks

  • Make this dairy free.Any plant based alternative, such as oat or almond milk, will work just as well in this recipe.
  • A low-carb option. You can leave out the honey if you want to lower the number of carbs in your drink.

The bananas and blueberries are pretty sweet, so this shake will stay tasty!

  • Save those brown bananas!Overripe bananas areperfectfor smoothies.

Once they get just a bit too mushy to eat on their own, chop them up and freeze them for your next shake craving.

Just don’t use chunks that are too large, or you might burn out your blender.

  • Always opt for frozen fruit. You might be surprised to learn that frozen fruit tends to be more nutritious than fresh.

Why? Because it’s picked at peak ripeness! Aside from that, the frozen texture is just so refreshing.

  • Want an even thicker blueberry banana smoothie? That’s always what I prefer! You can throw in some yogurt to thicken things up, or use a little less milk.

You can also use a bit more banana than the recipe calls for, which will make the drink even creamier.

Kitchen Tools You Will Need

  • Blender– With these icy ingredients, you’ll really want a great blender! This one works great and will suit all of your future smoothie or milkshake needs.
  • A sturdysilicone spatulacan be used to scrape down the sides when blending, plus get out every last drop of your blueberry banana smoothie!

Blueberry Banana Smoothie FAQ

Do you have to use frozen bananas in fruit smoothies?

You certainly don’thaveto! However, I do recommend it. They’re actually a bit sweeter when they’re frozen, and they help to thicken the mixture.

Fresh bananas have their own charm, of course. They’re a tad bit creamier and are much easier to blend. But you will notice that difference in taste and texture.

What is the difference between a milkshake vs. smoothie?

One ingredient — ice cream! Also, smoothies can be made with milk, juice, or even water as the liquid base. Milkshakes always use some form of milk as the liquid (hence the name), plus plenty of ice cream to make it frosty and creamy.

Should you use ice in a smoothie?

That all depends on your ingredients! Since my banana and blueberry smoothie recipe uses frozen fruit, there’s no need for ice — it gets nice and thick on its own.

Ice would be needed if you try to use fresh fruit, but it also waters down the flavor a bit.

How do I thicken this easy smoothie?

The best way to add thickness is to use the simple ingredients on hand. Adding a frozen banana or frozen blueberries will naturally add a thicker texture to this smoothie in the perfect way. I prefer doing this over ice cubes because the ice cubes will melt and water down the smoothie.

Can I make this easy blueberry banana smoothie in advance?

For the best results, I’d make this healthy breakfast idea fresh. If you make this thick smoothie too early and try and save it for later, it will separate a bit, and lose some of that texture that we all love and crave.

To make a great smoothie, gather the simple ingredients listed on the recipe card and make this recipe fresh.

Can I add other liquids to this smoothie?

You can add coconut milk, unsweetened almond milk, coconut water, cow’s milk, and even soy milk. Different varieties might change the flavor a bit, but it’ll still taste delicious.
